Cacti are the original low-maintenance houseplants: sculptural, drought-proof, and happy on a sunny sill. Handle with gloves — spines are no joke. This one is Cactus 4”.

Difficulty: Easy.

Light: As much direct sun as you can give it — a south or west windowsill is perfect.

Care: Soak, then let dry completely. In winter, water sparingly (once a month or less). Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced plant food, and repot one size up when roots crowd the pot.

Size: Varies widely by type, from a few inches to several feet over many years.

Toxicity: Non-toxic — a safe pick for homes with pets and children.
